Volcanic diversity around lake Myvatn

Beans, bacon and eggs were on todays breakfast menu to provide required energy for a day around lake Myvatn. To fit with the uncertain weather forecast we kept the day planning on possible activities and flexible decisions.

We decided to stop at rootless cones from Skútustaðir as it was dry when we were approaching them. We strolled through this amazing landscape experiencing this rather soft form of lava "rock" and the millions of flies which provided the lake its name.

Following the road the next would have been Dimmuborgir, unsurprisingly we did not made it, as we had to make an intermediate stop to enjoy natures beauty and to refill batteries with a small Sandwich.

Finally we arrived at the dark city/castle Dimmuborgir home of Elfes and Trolls including the 13 Yule Lads which from the 12th of December onwards each night one of them is visiting the children similar to Santa Claus. Again our boys did a great job and we easily made the large circle to the Kirkja a impressive lava formation.

So far our stops were characterized by the lava flow, now we headed towards Krafla volcano system and its crater lake Viti. The parking lot just at the edge of crater demands just a couple of steps to a spectacular view. It was a good decision to walk along the crater as on the mountain side the path crosses a small solfatara aera in combination with deep blue from the lake a beautiful color play only nature can provide.

On the way back our last stop was at Hevrir with its numerous boiling mud pots, fumaroles and solfatara. As fascinating this geological phenomenon is, the smell was bit too intensive for the kids. Blessed with some last sun beams we returned "home" - full of wonderful impressions.
